A posture as common as the forward one
Each year, Uranus appears to slow against the stars, stop, and begin moving backward. That halt is the station; it opens a retrograde of roughly five months — so nearly half of every year, Uranus is in its reversed posture, which makes the inward mode less an event than one of its two ordinary states.
Uranus does not actually reverse. A station is a perspective effect, as Earth overtakes the slower planet; gives the mechanism. Because Uranus moves so slowly, its retrograde covers only a few degrees, but those degrees are crossed three times — forward, backward, forward. For a chart touched at those degrees, that triple pass is a year-long, three-act story: the first pass surprises, the retrograde pass internalizes, the final pass settles.
What Uranus governs
Uranus is the disruptive function of the chart: where you break from convention, insist on your own truth, and need freedom. Its domain is sudden change, awakening, and the rearrangement of what appeared stable. Classical astrology did not know it — its discovery in 1781 coincided with the American and French revolutions — and modern practice consistently correlates it with ruptures and breakthroughs.
When Uranus turns retrograde, that disruption turns inward. The direct planet tends toward outer change — circumstances that shift, freedoms that open or close. The retrograde planet tends toward inner revision: the realization that a structure you thought was serving freedom is not.
The retrograde as freedom-audit
The tradition reads Uranus retrograde as the subtler, internal form of what Uranus always does — the rupture of the false to make room for the real. The inner disruption is usually less dramatic than the outer one. It is also frequently more durable: an outer break can be reversed by circumstance, but the person who has privately stopped believing in an arrangement does not start believing again.
Because it recurs every year, the retrograde functions as an annual audit of freedom — five months in which the question is this still alive? gets asked of whatever Uranus is touching. The craft is in the pacing. Uranian insight arrives in flashes, but five months is long enough to test an awakening before acting on it. The genuine realization survives repeated examination; the restless impulse degrades into boredom within weeks. Use the duration as the filter, and let any structural decision wait for the direct station, when insight can become architecture. The shadow is the opposite error — intellectualizing the disruption endlessly rather than letting it complete its honest work.
The rule
Ask what you are holding onto that is no longer an expression of what you actually are. Uranus retrograde does not demand a radical exit — it asks, calmly and annually, whether the current structure is alive or merely habitual.
