The waxing square
About a week after the New Moon the Moon reaches the First Quarter — half-lit, exactly 90° from the Sun. That right angle is a square: the aspect of friction, two forces pulling crosswise and forcing a decision. Because the Moon is still gaining light, this is a waxing square, a crisis of building rather than ending. Whatever the designed now meets its first resistance. The half rides high at sunset, asking for a move.
The Aquarius–Scorpio square
When the First Quarter Moon is in Aquarius, the Sun sits in Scorpio — and this exact pairing is the anchor of the lunation. Both are fixed signs, slow to bend, so the square is a standoff between two convictions that will not yield. But they could hardly be more opposed in temperature. Aquarius, fixed air ruled by Saturn, is cool, principled, and detached — it cares about the idea, the system, the fair rule applied to everyone. Scorpio, fixed water, is hot, intimate, and uncompromising — it cares about emotional truth, the specific bond, what is felt all the way down.
The Aquarius Moon pulls toward stay rational, keep perspective, hold the principle. The Scorpio Sun pulls toward get personal, feel it, commit completely to this one real thing. The friction is the gap between the abstract ideal and the messy intimacy it has to survive: a clean plan colliding with the heat of actual feeling — yours, or someone else's who is implicated in it.
Letting the ideal meet the heat
Aquarius's gift at a square is perspective — the ability to step back and see fairly. Its trap is using that altitude to escape feeling, to keep things impersonal precisely where they need to get personal. The Scorpio Sun calls that bluff: it asks whether your principle can withstand contact with real intimacy and personal stakes, or whether it was a way of staying safely above them.
Take the deliberate plan you set at the New Moon and notice where it has hit the friction of genuine feeling. The square wants action, so make a move that refuses the easy split: honor the principle and the person, the idea and the bond. Don't retreat into theory to avoid the heat, and don't let the heat torch the principle. The craft here is to let the cool design pass through the fire of real commitment and come out tempered rather than abandoned.
