Lunar returns

Every month, the Moon resets its clock.

The lunar return is the chart cast for the moment the Moon returns to its exact natal degree, roughly every twenty-seven and a third days. It describes the month's emotional and practical atmosphere — useful for short-range timing when read inside a longer timing frame.

The clock

The Moon moves faster than any other body in astrology, completing its circuit of the zodiac in roughly twenty-seven and a third days. When the transiting Moon returns to the exact degree it occupied at birth, a lunar return occurs. Over the course of a year, the Moon completes approximately thirteen returns — one for each month, sometimes one more.

Each lunar return chart is cast for the exact moment and location of the return. It describes the month ahead: its tone, its emotional weather, its areas of immediate attention.

What the lunar return describes

The Moon governs the inner life of the chart — emotional responsiveness, habitual patterns, bodily rhythms, domestic matters, and what feels safe or unsafe. At a return, these themes receive a fresh setting. The lunar return chart shows how the month is charted: which area of life receives the Moon's attention, what the emotional tenor is, and where any friction or ease arrives.

Unlike a solar return (which maps a full year), a lunar return is small in scale. It belongs to monthly timing. The chart can describe a month that feels emotionally vivid, socially active, professionally demanding, or inwardly withdrawn — but it cannot predict the course of a year, and it should not be asked to.

Reading the return chart

The lunar return chart has the same structure as any chart: an Ascendant, twelve houses, planets in positions. The reading is similar to the solar return but kept at a smaller scale.

The Ascendant and its ruler give the month its opening tone. The planet ruling the return Ascendant is the month's primary steward — where it falls and what aspects it makes define the month's character.

The Moon's house shows where the emotional and domestic attention gathers this month. Return Moon in the third house: the month may be dominated by communication, nearby travel, and mental activity. Return Moon in the eighth house: a month with a more private, depth-oriented, or financially complex atmosphere.

Planets on the angles — the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or IC — are amplified for the month. Even a planet with quiet natal prominence can become active in a given lunar return month if it is angular.

The Moon's aspects in the return chart describe the texture of the month. Return Moon closely aspecting Saturn: a month with more heaviness, restriction, or effort. Return Moon aspecting Jupiter: more ease, social warmth, or opportunity. These are not predictions of events; they are the month's weather.

Lunar returns inside longer timing

A lunar return is most useful when read as a chapter inside the larger book. The year has been set by profections (see ) and the solar return. Outer-planet transits describe sustained themes. The lunar return specifies: of all the months in this year, what does this particular month emphasize?

For instance: a profection year activating the tenth house (career, public standing) gives the year a vocational focus. The solar return may confirm this. But which months within the year become the most active? A lunar return month where the Moon is angular in the tenth, or where the return Ascendant ruler is making contact with the natal Midheaven, may specify the most active windows within the year's larger theme.

When the lunar return angles fall on natal planets — especially natal angles or the natal chart ruler — the month tends to be more concrete and eventful. When the return Moon is eclipsed (near the lunar nodes) or closely conjunct a powerful natal planet, the month carries additional weight.

The appropriate weight

Lunar returns should be read lightly and precisely. They refine timing; they do not generate it. A quiet lunar return during a major Saturn transit does not quiet Saturn — it describes how this particular month experiences that pressure. An active lunar return during a dormant period may produce an emotionally vivid month without producing lasting consequence.

The Moon's nature is rapid, cyclical, and rhythmic. Lunar returns share that nature. They are useful tools precisely because they work at human monthly scale — the scale of moods, weeks, and immediate concerns — rather than at the scale of years or decades.
