Lots and Arabic parts

A relationship between three chart factors becomes a sensitive point — and that point has a house, a ruler, and a story.

Lots (also called Arabic parts) are calculated zodiacal points derived from the distances between planets and angles. The most important are the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit; together they describe the terrain of embodied circumstance and conscious intention. They are best read after the main chart structure is established.

What a lot is

A lot (or Arabic part) is a calculated point on the zodiac — not a physical body, not a fixed star, but a position derived from the arithmetic relationship between three chart factors. The formula takes the distance (in degrees) between two planets or points and projects that distance forward from a third point.

The most famous example is the Lot of Fortune, sometimes called Pars Fortunae. Its basic formula:

  • In a day chart: Ascendant + Moon − Sun
  • In a night chart: Ascendant + Sun − Moon

The formula reverses by , which is why the lot cannot be calculated correctly without first establishing whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal. The result is a zodiacal degree that marks where, in the wheel, the Sun-Moon relationship "lands" relative to the Ascendant.

Fortune and Spirit

The Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit are the foundational pair. Their formulas are mirrors of each other: Fortune uses Ascendant + Moon − Sun (day) or the reverse (night); Spirit uses Ascendant + Sun − Moon (day) or the reverse.

Traditionally, the Lot of Fortune is associated with:

  • The body, health, and material circumstance
  • Livelihood and concrete resources
  • The portion of life shaped by fortune — what arrives without effort or in spite of it

The Lot of Spirit is associated with:

  • Intention, will, and conscious direction
  • Action and enterprise
  • The part of life where choice and agency play the determining role

The two lots exist as a philosophical pair, mapping the two poles of human experience: what the world does to us (Fortune) and what we do in the world (Spirit). Hellenistic astrologers treated them as equally important, assigning the primary luminary of sect to Fortune (the Moon in night charts, the Sun in day charts) and the secondary luminary to Spirit.

The wider lot system

Traditional sources catalog dozens of lots: lots for marriage, children, siblings, parents, illness, travel, courage, death. Each is derived from a specific planetary pair, with sect adjustments. Valens and Paulus of Alexandria list numerous formulas; later Persian and Arabic sources (from which the term "Arabic parts" derives) extended and modified the system.

In practice, most practitioners begin with Fortune and Spirit, then add the lot relevant to whatever topic is being judged. A chart investigation into livelihood might add the Lot of Exaltation; one into partnership might use the Lot of Marriage.

Resist the temptation to activate all lots simultaneously. A chart covered in hypothetical lots becomes noise rather than signal.

How to read a lot

A lot's meaning does not stand alone. The sequence is:

  1. Sign — what is the elemental and modal character of the lot's placement?
  2. House — which area of life does the lot fall in? Fortune in the 11th house connects its themes to the house of friendship, support, and gains.
  3. Ruler — which planet rules the sign the lot occupies? This planet is the lord of the lot and carries the lot's promise or difficulty into execution. A Lot of Fortune in Aries is governed by Mars; whether Fortune's topics actually materialize depends heavily on Mars's condition.
  4. Conjunctions and aspects — planets closely conjunct or in major aspect to the lot modify it directly.

The lord of the lot is the critical factor. A Lot of Fortune in an excellent position, ruled by a planet in fall in the 12th house, is a lot whose promise is hard to fulfill. A Lot of Fortune in a modest position, ruled by an angular, on-sect, dignified planet, is a lot with real leverage.

Lots in timing

Lots become especially useful in timing methods. regularly activate the Lot of Fortune — when the profection reaches the lot's house, or when the year's activated house matches the lord of Fortune's house, the lot comes into season. The same logic applies to transits and other period techniques.

This is why traditional astrologers paid close attention to the condition of the Lot of Fortune's lord in their timing analysis: that planet's quality and condition shaped the character of whatever period activated it.

The rule worth keeping

A lot is a relationship turned into a point. Read the point's house and sign; follow its ruler. The ruler's condition is what ultimately determines what the lot can deliver. Use lots after the main chart structure is understood — they sharpen a judgment already in progress, not replace it.
