What's happening
The Sun's ingress into Aquarius happens when its ecliptic longitude crosses from 30° Capricorn into 0° Aquarius, roughly a month after the winter solstice in the north. Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the tropical zodiac and the fourth of the fixed signs — the deep middle of winter, holding the old cross-quarter festival of Imbolc, when light was kindled communally against the season's hardest stretch.
The Sun spends about thirty days there. In the northern hemisphere this falls in the depth of winter; in the south, the height of summer.
The tradition
Aquarius is a fixed air sign, ruled by Saturn in classical astrology and co-ruled by Uranus in modern. The tradition describes it as the sign of the collective — networks, communities, peer groups, movements, the future, and the impersonal systems that shape a life from outside its intimate sphere.
The dignities carry the month's lesson: the Sun is in its detriment here, directly opposite its Leo domicile. The principle of central sovereignty spends a month in the one sign organized around the premise that nobody is the center. The detriment is the practice, not the problem: take the month's invitations to be useful without being central — the work credited to the team, the idea given away, the role served because the group needs it served. The self that can do this for a month, the tradition suggests, returns to its own center in Leo season with something better than applause: peers.
The shadow is detachment mistaken for objectivity — the clever observer who never joins. Aquarius at its best belongs somewhere; its gift is the gift of someone who chose their kin rather than inherited them.
