Horary astrology

A chart cast for the moment a question is sincerely asked — and read to answer that question specifically.

Horary astrology interprets a chart drawn for the exact moment a clear question is asked and understood by the astrologer. It uses house-based significators, the Moon, dignity, aspects, and reception to reach a concrete judgment about a specific matter — without requiring the querent's birth data.

A chart for a question

Every branch of astrology begins with a different kind of chart. Natal astrology reads the birth chart of a person. chooses a time. Horary astrology — from the Latin hora, hour — reads the chart of a question: a chart drawn for the exact moment a sincere question is asked and understood by the astrologer.

The premise is that the sky at the moment a question becomes fully formed and received carries the shape of the question's answer within it. The horary chart is not a mood or a symbol map to reflect upon. It is treated as a concrete body of evidence, read through specific rules to reach a specific judgment: yes or no, this or that, when or whether.

What makes a question "radical"

In horary tradition, a chart is called radical — valid for judgment — when certain conditions are met. The most important: the question must be genuine. The querent must be asking about something that actually matters to them, not testing the system or asking frivolously. The chart cast for a vague or half-formed question will reflect that vagueness.

Traditional sources also describe strictures against judgment — conditions that warn the astrologer to set the chart aside:

  • Very early degrees rising (less than 3°): the matter is not yet ready for judgment
  • Very late degrees rising (more than 27°): the matter is past the astrologer's help or already decided
  • Void-of-course Moon (see ): often read as "nothing will come of the matter"
  • Saturn in the 7th house: a warning about the astrologer's own judgment being compromised

These are advisory, not absolute. Experienced horary practitioners weigh them rather than mechanically apply them.

The significator system

Horary astrology reads through significators — planets assigned to represent specific parties or topics. The system is entirely house-based (see ):

  • 1st house always represents the querent (the person asking). The ruler of the 1st house sign is the querent's primary significator. The Moon is always co-significator of the querent.
  • The quesited — the thing asked about — is assigned to its relevant house. Asking about a romantic partner? 7th house. About money or possessions? 2nd house. About a sibling? 3rd house. About one's job or public reputation? 10th house. The ruler of that house is the primary significator of the quesited.

The reading becomes a drama between these significators: Are they applying to an aspect with each other? What is the nature of the aspect (trine, square, opposition, conjunction)? Does either planet receive the other by dignity? Are there planets about to interfere (prohibition) or carry the light between them (translation of light)?

The Moon's role

The Moon is the chart's moving hand. As the fastest body, its applying aspects describe how the matter flows and what it moves toward. In horary, the Moon's next applying aspect is often the single most important testimony — it describes the immediate direction of events.

A Moon applying to a trine or sextile with the ruler of the relevant house is generally favorable testimony. A Moon applying to a square or opposition with the ruler of the 7th house, while the querent is asking about a partnership, suggests difficulty. A void-of-course Moon — making no more major aspects before leaving its sign — is traditionally read as indicating that the matter will not develop further: nothing will come of it.

Aspects, reception, and prohibitions

In horary, aspects must be applying (moving toward exactness) to carry real force. Separating aspects describe what has already happened, not what will. An applying conjunction between the significators of querent and quesited — especially if they are in reception, each in a sign where the other has dignity — is one of the strongest indicators that the matter will come together.

Prohibition occurs when a third planet perfects an aspect with one of the significators before the two significators reach each other — interrupting the contact and often blocking the outcome. Translation of light occurs when a faster-moving planet separates from one significator and applies to the other, carrying the light between them — sometimes enabling an outcome that the two significators alone could not reach directly.

This technical vocabulary is not ornament. Each of these conditions changes the reading.

What horary can and cannot do

Horary can answer specific, bounded questions: Will this deal close? Where is the lost object? Is this person trustworthy in this matter? Will I get the job? The specificity is the point — the narrower and clearer the question, the more the chart can speak to it.

Horary cannot replace a natal chart for questions about life patterns, developmental themes, or long-term character. It is not designed for "What is my life purpose?" or "Will I ever be happy?" Those are natal questions. Horary is designed for "Will this specific thing happen?"

Repeated questioning on the same matter — asking the same question twice because the first answer wasn't the one wanted — is a misuse of the method. The tradition is firm on this: a sincere question asked once generates the chart; second-guessing it by re-asking muddies both the practice and the astrologer's judgment.

See for how horary sits within the wider map of the craft.
